Find Activism Jobs

Locate Activism Jobs in Your Area

By Tom Head, About.com

If you're looking for activism jobs, there are some great resources out there. Here are a few that I've heard especially good things about.

Idealist.org

idealist.org is a combination job search database, volunteer activities database, and social networking tool. Think of it as a combination of MySpace and Monster.com, but geared specifically to activism. If you're considering a career in social justice activism and haven't checked this site out, you're missing out on something wonderful.

Nonprofit Oyster

This site, which is sort of like Monster.com for nonprofits, is a massive directory of job opportunities in the nonprofit sector. Not all of the jobs are activism jobs, but a good number of them are, so be sure to give this site a look.

Opportunity Knocks

This directory of nonprofit jobs seems to be a little bit more activism-focused than Nonprofit Oyster--but they have separate databases, so be sure to check both of them out if you're job hunting.

Feminist Career Center

This directory, a project of the Feminist Majority Foundation, lists feminist jobs all over the country. If you care about women's rights in any area--from general feminist advocacy and activism to specific causes, such as domestic violence prevention--then checking this list of jobs is a must.

About.com: Job Searching

My colleague Alison Doyle maintains a pretty comprehensive directory of general job searching resources. Most of the job databases she profiles include activist job listings, and most of her job hunting tips apply to activism just as much as they do any other line of work, so be sure to give her site a look.
