The State of North Carolina has become the first in the country to establish an Innocence Inquiry Commission. The commission, which may have been inspired in part by the highly successful Innocence Project (whose work has led to the release of 183 wrongly convicted prisoners to date), will deal with cases in which inmates may be exonerated based on DNA data or other compelling evidence. According to the Christian Science Monitor, 12 other states are considering similar legislation.
