Claim to Fame:

Co-founder of the Heritage Foundation, a right-wing think tank, in 1973; co-founder of Christian Voice (U.S.), a right-wing public policy organization featuring candidate scorecards, in 1978; co-founder of the Moral Majority, the first major Religious Right organization, in 1979.

Career Highlight:

If there's one person who can be described as the "founder" of the modern Religious Right, it's Paul Weyrich. No single figure was more influential during the 1970s.

Scandal/Controversy:

In a 1999 open letter, Weyrich wrote: "I believe that we probably have lost the culture war ... This is why, even when we win in politics, our victories fail to translate into the kind of policies we believe are important."

5 Quotes:

"We are different from previous generations of conservatives... We are no longer working to preserve the status quo. We are radicals, working to overturn the present power structure of this country."

"Mao was right: for the capital to fall you have to control the countryside, and we lost sight of that fact."

"Don't be misled by politicians who say that everything is great, that we are on the verge of this wonderful, new era thanks to technology or the stock market or whatever. These are lies. We are not in the dawn of a new civilization, but the twilight of an old one. We will be lucky if we escape with any remnants of the great Judeo-Christian civilization that we have known down through the ages."

"I am struck by the fact that we have lots of people who want to be nicer than God. If you read Scripture, Jesus was not some sort of milquetoast person with supreme charity. He cut people in two."

"We can't put our faith in political saviors. This is one of the biggest mistakes that was made in the previous incarnation of the Religious Right ... Just as the communists are clinging to power wherever they can do it, even though communism has collapsed, so also will the secular humanists cling to power, because, for them, that's all there is. Remember, you have God. You have your families; you have your community, your church community, your neighborhood, and all the things you are concerned about. They only have power. That's all that matters to them. They will fight with everything that's in them to keep that power."
