Dry County

By Tom Head, About.com

Definition: A dry county is a county in which alcoholic beverages may not be legally sold.

No state has entirely banned alcohol since Mississippi repealed its Prohibition laws in 1966 (Prohibition was repealed at the federal level with the ratification of the 21st Amendment in 1933), but many states allow counties and/or cities to vote on whether or not alcohol may legally be sold at the local level.
