When Hal Mumme came on board as head football coach at New Mexico State University in Spring 2005, the team's star tailback Mu-ammar Ali had already played for the university on an athletic scholarship for two seasons. According to the lawsuit, this wasn't good enough for Mumme--who made the bizarre decision to interrogate the young Muslim student about al-Qaeda.
Mumme, an evangelical Christian, also allegedly required that players recite the Lord's Prayer before and after every game. Ultimately, Ali and two other Muslim players were taken off the team--almost certainly because of their beliefs. The ACLU is now on the case.
