Are civil liberties a liberal issue?

By Tom Head, About.com

Question: Are civil liberties a liberal issue?
Answer: It certainly should be. The very word "liberal" comes from the same Latin word root as "liberties"--liber, meaning free or unrestrained. Literally speaking, it could be argued that a liberal is, by definition, someone who is concerned about civil liberties.
