The Post-Bush Era
Tuesday September 26, 2006
Category: History and Profiles
In 28 months, the Bush administration will be history--the good, the bad, and the ugly filed away under "legacy," the business of scholars and museums. Civil libertarians will breathe a sigh of relief as Americans elect a new president, the first of the post-9/11 era. And all indications seem to suggest that this new president, regardless of who it is, will probably be an improvement over Bush with regard to most civil liberties issues.
Over the coming weeks, I'll be profiling likely 2008 presidential candidates on their civil liberties platforms. First come the Republicans, the heirs to President Bush's party. This week, I've profiled three leading candidates: former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, maverick U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), and the most promising of the three, Governor George Pataki (R-NY). After you've had a chance to read up on these potential nominees, please feel free to share your thoughts on their candidacies.
