This week (September 25-29) is the 25th annual Banned Books Week, which celebrates books that have been banned or challenged in the past or that are being banned or challenged now. Here are a few places you can visit to mark the occasion:
|
- Hit the books with the American Library Association, which has created a special page for Banned Books Week, though it isn't loading for me at the moment--probably because thousands upon thousands of teachers and librarians are visiting the site as we speak!
- Go worldwide with Amnesty International, which is calling attention to international authors who face censorship and repression.
- Get educated with Elizabeth Kennedy, who has provided a Frequently Asked Questions feature on the history of Banned Books Week.
- Get dirty with my list of the Top 10 "Obscene" Literary Classics, from James Joyce's Ulysses to John Cleland's Fanny Hill.
- Look at other shocking examples of censorship, as brought into focus by the annual Jefferson Muzzle Awards.
