What the Man with the Fetus Poster Said

Category: Abortion

Last week, I spent 30 hours participating in Jackson, Mississippi's own Reproductive Freedom Summer '06. That's me standing there on the left with the water bottle on the morning of July 22nd, as we began the long march to the capitol steps in downtown Jackson, Mississippi. I've received many more photos from the event, and will probably be doing a gallery documenting the week's protests at some point. The photo doesn't capture the full size of the crowd, which approached 150--nowhere near the 300 or so people we'd gotten on the first day of protests, but still pretty darned good considering that we were marching across town under the burning sun with an 105-degree heat index.

We on the pro-choice side spent some of the week counterprotesting Operation Save America (formerly known as Operation Rescue), a national anti-abortion group that came to Jackson to shut down Mississippi's last abortion clinic. After I spent hours and hours at these counterprotests listening to the Rev. Flip Benham preach on the evils of abortion, homosexuality, Islam, and pretty much everything else, two thoughts crossed my mind. The first was that I really needed a Tylenol. The second was that so much of what he had to say about these issues wasn't just disagreeable--it was provably false.

So to my friends on the other side of the abortion debate, I offer this list of ten things that anti-abortion folks tend to get wrong--and a friendly link to U.S. Conservatives Guide Amy Hess' cogent and well-written Abortion Concerns section, which avoids most of the pitfalls that plague so many other anti-abortion sites.
